Quebec Energy Efficiency in Freight Transportation
The Ministère des Transports du Québec has established the Government Assistance Program for Improving Energy Efficiency in Freight Transportation as part of the 2006-2012 Action Plan on Climate Change of the Gouvernement du Québec.
The program’s objective is to encourage the acquisition of energy efficiency-enhancing equipment and new technologies in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in freight transportation.
The trucking component of the program will fund two types of activities:
Acquisition, installation, modification or replacement of certain devices or equipment allowing improvement of energy efficiency. Eligible devices and equipment include:
· Onboard generators and electrical backup systems
· Backup heating and air conditioning systems
· Onboard computers
· Aerodynamics-enhancing equipment
· Side skirts for semi-trailers
Grants equivalent to 30% of eligible expenses (up to designated maximums) are available.
Research and projects or pilot projects which show potential regarding energy efficiency and GHG reduction in freight transportation. Projects must be directly related to new technology in the freight transportation sector and fall under one of the following categories:
· Research and development project
· Experimental project
· Pilot or demonstration project
Financial assistance equivalent to 50% of eligible expenses (up to a maximum of $50,000) will be awarded to support the implementation of research or pilot projects on energy efficiency and GHG emission reduction.
Any device or equipment modification or replacement project that increases energy efficiency and reduces GHG emissions is eligible for a grant equivalent to 30% of eligible expenses (up to designated maximum).
